Tips for picking a kick-ass bracket (or one that doesn’t suck)

It’s easy to pick a FIREDISC® cooker. Tall or short? Fireman Red or Jet Black? There are no upsets to sink your college basketball tournament bracket in FIREDISC® Nation.

Here are a few tips to pick a bracket that doesn’t suck. It might work. It might not. If it doesn’t, you could always toss darts at it.

  1. Look for an upset of seeds Nos. 3-6

They’re far less solid than 1s and 2s because these are potential paper lions. Many have dealt with injuries or made a deep run in a conference tournament that hid weaknesses.

  1. Pick a No. 1 to win it all

The Cinderella pick is trendy, but they’re rarely the one that pays out. After the attrition of regional play, any No. 1 that advances has an advantage against lower seeds that scraped to get here.

  1. Work backwards

Pick your champion first, then your Final Four. They’re the ones you’ll win with, and going round-by-round puts you at risk for all the hopeful upsets.

  1. Let a 12 seed in

It’s tradition: A 12 knocking out a 5. Look at all four in the bracket and go with your heart with the 12 that feels like a dragon slayer.

  1. DON’T flip a coin!

Coin flips don’t know that 16s rarely beat 1s. Or that senior-heavy mid-majors are stronger than middling teams from power conferences. Save your quarter for scratching lottery tickets.
